The International Tourism Research Webinar which was held on June 19, 2020 is a key international partnership between Trisakti School of Tourism and James Cook University Australia, aiming to create new directions in tourism research.

The Webinar was attended by approximately 1,200 participants from 34 countries and regions in Asia, Australasia, Oceania, Africa, Europe, and America. The participants joined the sessions via Zoom and YouTube live.

The Webinar was opened by KPHA Dr. Bimo Prakoso PSC., MPA., MSc, the Chairman of Trisakti Foundation, followed by a brief presentation by Dr Alf Kuilboer, Academic Head Management, Governance & Tourism James Cook University Australia and Dr Myrza Rahmanita, SE, MSc, Head of Tourism Department Trisakti School of Tourism. The event was closed by Mrs Fetty Asmaniati, SE, MM, the President of Trisakti School of Tourism.

The Webinar had 4 speakers:

1. Professor Philip L. Pearce (James Cook University Australia)
2. Hera Oktadiana, Ph.D, CHE (James Cook University Australia and Trisakti School of Tourism Indonesia)
3. Dr. Walanchalee Wattanacharoensil (Mahidol University International College Thailand)
4. Denis Tolkach, Ph.D (James Cook University Cairns Campus Australia)

The content of the presentations emphasized overcoming myths in research and publication through the stories from the speakers’ research journeys in publishing their work in the top tourism international journals. The myths were:

1. Good research does not need to have a lot of money
2. There are many new methods to study tourists and tourism
3. Insightful research does not have to rely on sophisticated statistics (analyzing what people really say and do is very useful)
4. Building partnership amongst researchers across countries and with industry is a way forward
5. There are no shortcuts for good research and publishing – everyone has to work hard
6. Don’t be trapped by old and common ideas look for innovation and use creativity.
7. Be useful to your comments. Pay attention to the “So What” question – novelty, originality and significance to others. (Red)
